Our Little Man

Samuel is growing up quickly into a little man as evidenced by the photos below. It probably helps that we dressed him like a grownup this past weekend. Both of the grandparents came for the weekend and it was a fun time.

On Halloween we had a lot of fun dressing up Samuel as a Starfleet Officer. To be more specific he wore a uniform from Star Trek:The Next Generation and the color he is wearing is for Security, Operations, and Engineering. We choose it obviously for Engineering. My mom made the incredible shirt that he is wearing and we found a pin that worked well as a communicator. He wears it well with his intense stare that he likes to do.

Halloween 2009

Then on Sunday, November 1st we dedicated Samuel to the LORD. It was a really special moment for us because we went onto the same stage that we got married on. Pastor Tonye had some great words to share about the meaning behind a dedication, that it is a time for the parents to declare how they want to raise the child. Also he mentioned that it is not a baptism because a baptism requires that the person has made a commitment to follow Christ. Also praying with us was Pastor Jack, Brian (head of Chidren’s Ministry and friend of Joe), and our good friends Josh & Sandra who are his Godparents.

We came home and had a quick little family photo shoot that turned out well. It’s crazy to think the last family photo was almost 3 months ago.

P.S. Joe also got an early Christmas present of a MacBook Pro which allowed us to download all of the photos that were on our camera. Take a look at the new Samuel 3 Months album for more photo fun.

Samuel Survived 3 Months

Samuel has officially survived three months with us as parents. It has been quite a feat for him.

He has reached all kinds of new milestones this month including making drool bubbles, sucking on his fist, and making poop be more stinky. He has also learned how to giggle and smile more and recognizes who we are. Frequently when he sees one of us when he is softly crying he will get a big grin on his face.

Another fun milestone is that he now has the capacity to get scared. Joe was just making faces with him and tickling him, and all of a sudden he got really scared. Fifteen seconds later we were able to get him to open his eyes from crying and he gave us the biggest grin. Doesn’t seem like he will be scarred.

Samuel has also adjusted well to our new work schedule. I work from home in the mornings while Joe goes to work and then Joe comes home and I go to work. Samuel didn’t like taking the bottle again at first, but has gotten used to it again. He is at a really easy age right now and when he is awake a lot of fun to play with.

We have all kinds of video and pictures to share but we can’t seem to find the cable to our camera, so it will have to be in a separate post. But trust us, Samuel is one cute baby. :)

Samuel’s Baby Stats

A fun part about being a parent is watching your child grow. As Samuel gets bigger I am enjoying putting him in new outfits and seeing more of his personality emerge. Although I get sad sometimes when I miss how tiny he used to be.

A side benefit of watching your children grow is getting to look at baby stats. Since I find it interesting, I’ve decided to put an interactive chart on the journal so that others can see his progress. Below, in this post, is a big version of the chart and there will always be a small version in the sidebar on the right of the journal. Both versions allow you to right click on the chart and go to full screen to see it bigger. Hover over the data points to see what the exact value is. The newest data point is from yesterday when Samuel had his 2 month well visit. Enjoy!

Samuel’s Second Month

Samuel is now two months old. His personality has really started to emerge. During his play times he will laugh, giggle, smile, and coo. These developments are especially important so that we can remember the good side of his personality since he also has become colicky between the hours of 6pm to 9pm everyday.

He is getting stronger and stronger as the days go on, including being able to support himself on his legs (we have to hold him in position) and almost complete head control. He also has started to suck on on his thumb a little, which is an improvement over him trying to get his entire fist into his mouth. He is getting bigger and bigger as the days go on and is putting on his baby weight.

There are new photos in the Samuel two months album:

(Joe calls this “Swaddle FAIL”)

Samuel also had a little photo shoot with my favorite childhood stuffed animal “Barf Bear”. Barf Bear got his name because shortly after I received him as a Christmas gift from my Uncle Gregg (or Uncle Peanut Head, but that is a story for a different time), I got really sick and threw up on him. My mom cleaned him, but his fur on the left paw was never the same. Now Samuel gets to play with him like I always wanted to – by laying on top of him.

Samuel with Teddy Bear

Last weekend my parents and my grandmother came down to visit. They prefer to be called Nonno, Noni, and GG Marie now that Samuel is here. They had a great time playing with him and got him to laugh a bunch.

Lastly, I’ve moved around some photos. There is now an album called Samuel with Friends. There are also some new photos in there, including the one below that was taken at Avila Barn last week. Samuel and I hang out with some mommies and their babies that are close to Samuel’s age every few weeks. Last week we decided to head to Avila Barn and it was a lot of fun.

Whew. This is a long post, and it’s not everything that we have been up to. Now I know why we have been more tired than when Samuel first came home. :)

Samuel Likes Electronics

Samuel has started to get more animated lately, including starting to give us some real smiles. He also likes to smile at electronics – he must belong to us.

Take a look at this video to see his excitement over electronic items:

There are also some new photos up – Samuel 2 Months. Enjoy.

Samuel’s First Month

Samuel has been with us now for a month. It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a month, it feels like we just brought him home from the hospital. Looking at the photos of him we can see him getting bigger, so time must have passed!

To commemorate his month on the planet, I made a little video. Hope you like it!

Meet the (Grand)Parents

Samuel has been able to meet both sets of grandparents now.

The day that Samuel was born Kristen’s parents came down to visit for a week. Samuel enjoyed sleeping in Nonno and Noni’s (Italian for Grandpa and Grandma) arms.

Last weekend he got to meet his Grandpa, Grandma, and Great Grandma Olsen.
The Olsen Family

We also took a trip to Avila Barn, so Samuel could experience being outside and the family could enjoy some good food.

It was really great to see family and they were such a great help with Samuel.

Samuel at 2 Weeks Old

Today is the day that Samuel was due to be born. The only person who won the “When will Samuel arrive?” poll was Joe who answered “Right on time”. :) It’s so strange to think he has been with us for over 2 weeks now, especially since we had anticipated him to be coming in August. Joe and I are enjoying the faces he makes, how cute he is when he sleeps, and the funny baby noises. We are still adjusting to being parents – especially since he is on a special feeding schedule which doesn’t allow for much time outside of feeding him, eating, and sleeping.

There are all kinds of photos now posted in the Samuel 2 Weeks album, but I’ll leave this post with a photo that makes us laugh every time we see it. It is from his first bath.

Welcome Samuel Martin to the Olsen Clan

On July 25th at 6 p.m. we welcomed Samuel to the Olsen Clan. He was 20″ long and 7lbs 6oz. This means he was born 2.5 weeks early (kinda glad because he would’ve been a big baby). Here is the, not so brief, story behind that:

Thursday we went in for the standard prenatal exam after eating a late lunch. Kristen’s blood pressure was high and had elevated protein levels. The midwife told us she wanted to have Kristen monitored at labor and delivery. Between 5 and 9 they watched her blood pressure as well as test the levels in her body. At 9 we were told they believed she has preeclampsia and told us the treatment for it was to deliver. We trusted their judgement and decided to start inducing Kristen into labor. They got us all situated and started her treatment with an IV that included magnesium sulfate to fight the elevated blood pressure. After that they got her started on something to get her to induce. We quickly came up with a list of stuff for me to go and grab, as we hadn’t had the chance to pack a bag beforehand, and I went home to get it. We spent the whole night not getting much sleep as Kristen started to have contractions. We spent all day Friday doing this and the midwife wanted to break the her water but didn’t because Samuel was still not low enough. Come early Saturday morning the inducing was having less of an effect so she was taken off for a few hours and we were able to get a good amount of sleep. They then restarted her later in the morning and had her try to walk around to get Samuel to drop a little. This had the desired effect and one of the doctors came in and broke her water. Labor progressed much quicker from this point as the contraction started becoming stronger. A little after 5 Kristen was ready to start pushing and at 6 p.m. sharp Samuel was born. Everything went great and we have a healthy mom and baby. After two days they discharged both of them and were told to get lots of rest these next two weeks. We’re all really excited to start this new season of life.

Baby Shower North

My aunts threw me one of the nicest baby showers. It was at my parent’s house up in Folsom, in their newly redone backyard that was finished the day before! The backyard turned out really great, and it is hard to believe it is the same backyard that I used to play in growing up.

The shower was during some of the best weather and was very relaxed. As always my family made some great food and there were even blue candies on the tables. My mom made a cute diaper cake and there was chocolate cake with the words “See you soon baby Samuel”.

Everyone sat around eating and chatting until the gift time came. There were so many gifts to open because everyone was so generous. Samuel is going to have a lot of nice things that I’m sure he will love.

It was also a great time to see family and we got this great shot of all of the ladies in the family:

However, my favorite picture is when the future grandpas and father are putting together the stroller:
