Samuel 15 Months

Samuel had a big milestone month. Samuel finally has teeth!

IMG_7323.jpg

They just started to come in a few weeks ago and are the two front bottom teeth. This is right on track with when I got my first teeth.

Samuel is really starting to enjoy “reading” books. He loves to pick up a book and point to the words with a bouncy inflection to his babble.

IMG_7211.jpg

He can even “read” when the book is upside down!

Samuel loves to point at things and ask what they are. His way of asking is by saying “auh-auh?”

IMG_7276.jpg

He has always been a very inquisitive child.

Samuel becomes elated and enamored when around other children. There have been several times when Samuel just laughs and giggles just at the sight of another toddler near him. Other times when we are in unfamiliar places with older children around he will just stand and stare in silence at them until we take him away.

Here he is at the park where he stood next to the swings for 30 minutes and refused to move. The children are across from him at another swing set.

We went out a few weeks ago with some of his friends and their Moms for the annual trip to Avila Barn. Here is a picture from last year:

Samuel also learned how to climb up the stairs a few days ago and has started to wear pajamas and sleep with a normal blanket at night.

IMG_7206.JPG

He continues to put his thumb in his mouth when he is tired.

We also went up to celebrate Samuel’s Great-Grandmother Thelma’s 90th Birthday (my Grandma) and Samuel got to play with a bunch of cousins his age. He especially loved to spend time with Jared:

Our son Samuel is growing up so quickly and is becoming such a delightful toddler. More pictures are available in the new albums:

Meet Our Toddler

Samuel became a toddler this month by starting to take a few steps at the beginning of the month and by the end of the month is using walking as his main mode of transportation. Here is a video to introduce you to our new toddler:

Samuel also started to use his first word – “Wow!”. It is so cute how he lifts up his head when he says it, here is a video of all the ways he says it:

There are also all kinds of cute pictures in the bottom two photo albums, click on the photos to see all of them:

Samuel’s 1st Birthday & Party

Since we love having parties at our place, we decided to have a big one for Samuel when he turned 1. We had a really great time with our friends and my parents, and Samuel enjoyed everything except for the Birthday song.

IMG_5957.JPG

Everything was decorated with a Rainforest theme since those were his favorite kinds of toys. Our friends Laurie and Sandra made some beautiful artwork of animals commonly found in the Rainforest to hang on the wall. In the garage we had a bunch of tables with lilypads and frogs on them, foosball, DDR, and a toddler swing. In the living room was more seating and a slideshow of pictures of Samuel. At the dining table was a place for people to make books for Samuel and our friends made some really unique books for him. Outside was a wading pool, sprinkler, and a bunch of water toys.

For the food we had a bunch of sodas and chips. Joe made some wonderful Hamburgers, BBQ Chicken, and Portobello Mushrooms, and my Mom made some yummy cupcakes and Samuel’s cake.

Some of Samuel’s friends were there and we had a group shot with a few of them:

He and his friends also had fun playing in the water:

We got Samuel a push car for his Birthday, and he really loved it. His friend Lilly also enjoyed pushing him:

The day after on his actual Birthday, we let him open the presents:

Samuel may not be able to remember his 1st Birthday, but we sure will be able to remind him of the fun he had.

Samuel 1 Year Recap

Samuel turned 1 year old on July 25. When he was born he was 7lbs, 6oz (~35%) and was 20in long (~60%) and now he is around 21lbs (~20%) and 32in long (~90%). His feet and hands are big, but his head is small. We love how cute he is, especially with all of his quirks, except for the challenge it is to find clothing that works for him. It will be interesting to see if he is going to continue to be tall for his age. Here is a quirky picture of what he looked like when he was born:

DSCN0118.jpg

It is amazing to see how his personality has grown since he was born, and how in some ways it has stayed the same. When he was born he came out “talking” a lot and moving constantly. He even head-butt Joe when Joe first held him. He has always been a constant mover and only in the first few months would he let people hold him. At one year old he is constantly crawling around and “talking” all of the time.

IMG_5891.JPG

Samuel has always been comfortable around people, but as he has gotten older, he now really enjoys people. He especially loves being around kids, and he grins from ear to ear when he sees other kids his age. He gets joy in making people laugh and smile. He definitely takes after Joe in being an extrovert.

IMG_5621.JPG

Samuel has loved music since before he was born. There were many times I could tell he enjoyed the music I was listening to or singing because he would move around and kick vigorously. When he was just a month or two he would smile whenever his little toy that made music went off. Now he shows his delight for music by “dancing” – bobbing up and down. He will even change the rhythm that he moves to match the beat of the song.

It’s so hard to believe how much of a little person Samuel is becoming and we are delighted to see how he grows in his next year of life.

New York Visit 2010

In July right before Samuel’s 1st Birthday, all of us traveled across country to Long Island to visit with Joe’s side of the family. We had a really great time, despite the challenges that Samuel had with traveling (we spent the majority of the plane trip both ways trying to keep him from crying through both flights). Although we were tired when we arrived, after a few hours of rest, all of us were much happier and Samuel was so happy the whole time we were there.

Both Samuel and I got to meet a bunch of cousins, aunts, uncles, and say Happy Birthday to Joe’s Grandma Olsen. Curtis who is Joe’s youngest cousin was really excited to meet Samuel and they both had a blast together:

IMG_5726.JPG
IMG_5743.jpg

Curtis even taught Samuel how to play the piano:

IMG_5779.JPG

Grandma Olsen was excited to see Samuel too, since she hadn’t seen him since he was 2 weeks old:

IMG_5799.jpg

Most of the time while we were there, we just relaxed around the house. They had a pool, so we took Samuel in a few times. Here is a family shot of us in the water:

IMG_5812.JPG

Samuel loves to be thrown up into the air, and he had even more fun in the pool. He looks like he’s perfecting his stunt moves:

IMG_5825.JPG

Samuel loved being on top of the raft:

IMG_5843.JPG

When he was on the raft by himself, he actually fell asleep more than once. We didn’t get a picture of it, but we did catch a picture of him sleeping in the crib, which is impressive since he normally wakes up when we open the door:

IMG_5871.JPG

One of the days we were there, we had a babysitter for Samuel for the day so that we could travel to the Big Apple to see The Lion King on Broadway. It was such a great gift that Joe’s parents gave us and we had a wonderful time. The show was amazing and we even had fun playing at the huge Toys ‘R Us across the way. Here is a picture of us in front of the sign:

IMG_5884.JPG

We had such a great time and can’t wait to go back and visit again once Samuel is old enough to enjoy the traveling!

Photo Updates

Samuel turned 13 Months today and he is learning new things all of the time and has been keeping us pretty busy. Soon there will be posts about the New York Trip, Samuel’s 1st Birthday, Samuel at 13 Months and more, but I’ve finally gotten around to posting all of the photos for the past two months. Here are the links to all of the new albums in date order. Enjoy!

Here’s one of the most recent pictures of Samuel so you can see how he’s becoming even more expressive:

IMG_6158.jpg

P.S. There were a total of 250 photos uploaded, so might take you a while to go though them. It took me several hours to get it down to this amount too. :)

Pants on the Ground

Samuel decided he needed to make an answer to the song “Pants on the Ground”. Here is what he came up with:

This video is dedicated to Samuel’s Nonno and Noni.

P.S. I just was able to download the 500 photos from the last few weeks. It will probably still be a bit until the photos from the New York Visit, Samuel’s 1st Birthday, and his 1 year old album are uploaded. Thanks for your patience!

Happy 1st Birthday Samuel!

One year ago we welcomed our sweet son Samuel into the world. We enjoyed a great day yesterday of celebrating his birth with friends and family. There is more to come from our trip to New York earlier this week and the party yesterday, but enjoy the video below of him eating his birthday cake.

Samuel’s Summer Splash RSVP

Last day to RSVP for Samuel’s Summer Splash! Please RSVP at splash.theolsenfam.com so we have enough food and know what kind of food you like!

Samuel 11 Months

Samuel is now 11 Months old and only one month away from having been on this earth for one full year. It has been a very busy month with several travels to visit family, lots of events, and fun visits by friends. I wanted each event to be a separate post, but things have been busy, so they are all on here :)

Samuel’s personality continues to emerge and he is loving to babble constantly. He still hasn’t decided he wants to stand on his own or walk, since he is content crawling and leaning against furniture. This is one of my favorite pictures from this month, since he looks like a little man:

IMG_5094.jpg

He is a hungry little boy and loves waffles and cheese, although he continues to love bananas and enjoys blueberries. He also loves to eat paper, so we only let him play with it while supervised:

There are many more pictures in the Samuel 11 Months Album.

San Diego Visit

Samuel had a lot of firsts this month, starting with his first time being around a dog. Samuel and Baron really enjoyed playing with each other, although maybe a little too much. Baron is Joe’s parent’s dog and there is a great picture that Joe took of the “guys”:

IMG_4535.JPG

Samuel also got to meet his Great-Great Grandmother:

IMG_4903.JPG

And his Uncle Craig:

And family friends:

We had a really fun visit and there are more pictures in the San Diego Visit Album.

Brenda’s Visit

Samuel also went to Pismo Beach for the first time when Brenda came down to visit. He and Brenda really enjoyed the company of each other:

IMG_5031.JPG

Brenda and I have been friends for a really long time and it was fun for the three of us to hang out:

IMG_5020.JPG

Brenda brought an early birthday gift to Samuel, and he really really enjoyed the bag that Brenda put the gift in (he’s also wearing the shirt she got him from Honduras):

My parents were also down for their anniversary and dropped in to say hi:

There are more pictures in the Brenda’s Visit June 2010 Album.

Samuel & Friends

Samuel also had the opportunity to play over at his Godparents Josh & Sandra’s house and they taught him how to play the piano:

IMG_5272.JPG

He is quite the natural:

IMG_5268.JPG

They also let him play with wood blocks and he thought they were rather tasty:

Folsom Visit

Samuel also had his first time in the pool when we went up to visit my family in Folsom. We went up because we needed to get a “new” car since our car was totaled (it was just me in the car, wasn’t my fault and everything is fine). Samuel wasn’t too sure about the pool because it wasn’t as warm as he is used to with his bath, although he certainly is the cutest little shark ever:

IMG_5548.JPG

He also played for the first time in a tent. The tent had a tube for him to crawl through and he had a lot of fun:

IMG_5492.JPG

While Samuel was in the pool, we also had a BBQ with my extended family:

IMG_5564.JPG

The day before Joe and I also had a little “date” when my mom watched Samuel while we hung out at the mall and shopped. It was the first time we have been out without Samuel that wasn’t a wedding, since our anniversary last year when Samuel was 2 weeks old. It was strange not having him there, but we felt like teenagers again – in a good way.

The next day was Father’s Day, so I got to give my dad a card and had some special gifts for Joe’s first Father’s Day. The first gift was a signed copy of Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dads and Kids to Share, and the second gift was an engraved silver ring that said Samuel in Hebrew. Later that day, my mom watched Samuel again so that my dad and us could go see Toy Story 3. I wish my Mom was there so that I wasn’t the only one balling my eyes out. We left that day in what was formerly my Dad’s car, a really nice Toyota Camry – in Silver! Yeah for grandparents!

PHEW. That was long, thanks for reading!
